This is one of the most popular questions asked amongst those interested in the Polaris Slingshot. The short answer is both, but it wasn’t always that way.
Back in late 2014, released as a 2015 model, the Slingshot was only available with a manual transmission. Its popularity grew very quickly, and there became an increasing demand for an automatic version. Let’s face it, there are a lot of people out there who do not know how to drive a manual, as it’s slowly becoming a lot less common in cars.
I heard grumblings amongst the Slingshot community that were for and against the idea of an automatic version. Some felt it would take away from the fun of driving it, or that people should learn how to drive a manual if they want one. Others felt it would be less to focus on, possibly more relaxing. Especially if they were inexperienced with a manual. You would be able to focus more on the ride or conversation with your passenger. Like with any topic, opinions varied.
Well, as of 2020, Polaris ended that debate and released their first automatic model. They refer to it as Auto Drive. In 2021 and 2022 they have continued to make both manual and automatic models available. I strongly believe this will continue going forward. Check out the lineup here.
From a business perspective, and an enthusiast perspective, I feel it’s a smart move. You have now made that same great vehicle and experience available to a whole other group of people who now get to feel what it’s like to drive a Slingshot.
